Select Board Vice Chair Susan Harrison opened this week’s town update by highlighting a robust schedule of community events, including the grand opening of the small dog park at 167 Driftway this Saturday and the annual Fisherman's Fest on Sunday. Harrison encouraged residents to visit the Town Pier to "enjoy local restaurant, food trucks, um, local seafood, ice cream, and more," noting that the festival will include harbor tours and live music. The Select Board is also preparing for a Tuesday meeting featuring a historic study update from the Mordecai Lincoln committee regarding the future of the property.
Town Administrator James Boudreau officially marked the start of autumn while issuing a health advisory following the detection of West Nile Virus in Scituate mosquito samples and Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Norwell. Boudreau also detailed an extensive list of DPW projects, including seawall repairs on Oceanside and revetment stone work at Surfside Road that will require residents to avoid street parking. Regarding upcoming water maintenance, Boudreau warned that "it is anticipated that surrounding areas may see brown water from this annual required test" as the facilities department conducts fire pump flow testing at the library and public safety complex next Monday.
School Committee Chair Nicole Brandolini welcomed Dr. Thomas Raab to his first full week as interim superintendent, noting his visible presence at recent elementary back-to-school nights. Brandolini addressed new measures to manage student behavior at athletic events, stating that "SPS is working to increase safety protocols at football games, including hiring more staff for supervision" and implementing a no-reidmittance policy. She also announced that the district received a state grant to fund world language proficiency testing for eighth graders and invited the public to the next school committee meeting on September 29th.
