Scituate town officials gathered Monday morning to provide a comprehensive update on public health, infrastructure, and leadership transitions within the school district. Select Board Clerk Jamie Gilmore opened the briefing by reminding residents of upcoming municipal meetings and community events, specifically highlighting the annual halfway to St. Patrick’s Day celebration this Saturday at the Scituate Beach Association. Enjoy this final week of summer as fall starts next Monday, Gilmore remarked, noting that the seasonal shift brings a busy schedule for town boards and commissions.

Town Administrator James Boudreau delivered several critical public health and infrastructure updates, beginning with the announcement that mosquito samples in Scituate have tested positive for West Nile virus, while neighboring Norwell has seen positive tests for EEE. Boudreau also detailed extensive coastal work, noting that crews are currently mobilizing to Surfside Road and Seaside Road for seawall and revetment repairs. Crews will also begin mobilizing to Seaside Road to make repairs to the existing seawall and revetment stonework beginning this week, Boudreau stated, adding that residents should avoid parking on Standish and Seaside Roads to accommodate heavy equipment. Additionally, National Grid has begun notifying homeowners of upcoming "smart meter" installations, which will be performed by identified contractors from Utility Partners of America.

The school department is facing a significant leadership change following the retirement of Superintendent Bill Burkhead. School Committee member Janice Lindlum announced that an interim superintendent would be appointed during a meeting on September 16th to ensure a smooth transition while the district begins its search for a permanent replacement. The school committee would like to thank Mr. Burkhead for his leadership of our district through the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous capital and operational improvements, and laying the foundation for future academic success for students, Lindlum said. She also highlighted recent athletic successes, including the varsity football team's 27-5 victory over Duxbury, and noted that the district’s Spanish exchange students are concluding their visit this week.
