The Scituate School Committee significantly expanded the Scituate High School curriculum this week, approving a new Dramatic Arts program featuring three specialized courses: Foundations of Theater, Acting One, and Set Design and Production. Principal Langer presented the update alongside Mrs. Rundle, noting the additions were designed to meet student interest. We are adding a dramatic arts program with the addition of three additional courses... these classes are open to 9th through 12th graders, Langer explained. Motion Made by Janice Lindblom to approve the student high school program of studies as presented. Motion Passed 5-0. The committee also secured leadership for Cushing Elementary by approving a contract for Interim Principal Kate Schula through June 2027. Thomas Raab praised her impact on the school community, stating, Kate's been doing a fantastic job since December 24th... she's dove in and has just made a world of difference. The district received a generous donation from Andrew Scanzillo and Scanzillo Corporation in the form of an enclosed trailer for the high school robotics team. While the committee expressed gratitude for the $3,000 gift, Peter Gates raised practical concerns regarding its upkeep. Whenever we receive anything of value, we don't always know who's responsible for it, Gates noted, emphasizing the need for clear storage and insurance plans. Motion Made by Janice Lindblom to accept the donation from Andrew Scanzillo for the robotics team. Motion Passed 5-0. Furthermore, the committee authorized a contract with First Beacon Group for a district needs assessment to facilitate strategic planning. Carey Borkoski sought clarification on the outreach efforts, stating, I just want to be sure I want to make sure I understand how it's going to be processed... I want to make sure we're reaching the right people. Motion Made by Janice Lindblom to approve the district needs assessment contract as presented. Motion Passed 5-0.
Assistant Superintendent Ryan Lynch provided an update on the Bullying Prevention and Intervention Task Force, which recently collected over 700 responses from families and staff. We want to thank the 524 responses we received from families, which is a pretty good cross-section, Lynch said. Nicole Brandolini shared her optimism regarding the district's current standing, remarking, I think the good news without giving too much away is like I feel like the policy we have is quite strong. Mrs. Rundle added her perspective on the data analysis, saying, It's been a great experience. I've enjoyed getting to know the staff... it was just really fruitful. The committee also accepted $1,400 in donations for the wrestling team in memory of Kevin Curtis. Motion Made by Janice Lindblom to accept the Scituate wrestling team donation in the amount of $1,400 with great appreciation. Motion Passed 5-0.
The meeting concluded with a debate over a proposed waiver for the kindergarten entrance age, which would allow children born between September 9 and 15 to be screened for early admission. Maria Fenwick suggested that while the change offers flexibility, it requires careful implementation: We can look at some wording that will address the enrollment question as well as the screening. Janice Lindblom warned against creating false expectations for parents, noting, Just because your kids get screened, they're not getting in... I think we want to be careful with our language. The committee agreed to refine the policy language before a final vote. Following the discussion, the committee moved to adjourn before their scheduled budget hearing. The meeting was adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
